Unsafety

Juan Carlos González (76) was at his house in Passeig Grecia at 5800, in Villa Diamante (Lanús), when a young man, who had climbed from the sidewalk with alleged intentions of robbing him, surprised him. The retiree pulled the gun from him and shot him. Wounded, the thief tried to escape, but collapsed some 30 meters away. He died within minutes.

It was still daylight, around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, when the retiree heard noises and went out into the patio to see what was happening.

As recorded by security cameras, the thief walked around the block several times until he decided to climb the wall and break into the property.

While he was doing it, a neighbor was loading a truck a few meters away and witnessed the scene. Also the other inhabitants of the block who, in the midst of silence, heard several shots.

González was inside and heard the noises. It was at that moment that, alerted to the situation, he ran to get his .40 caliber Bersa Thunder pistol and fired. One of those bullets wounded the offender, who -wounded- tried to escape.

To do so, he jumped off the roof. He fell grabbing the stomach area and managed to move a few meters, until he lost consciousness. The neighbors immediately called for an ambulance and the doctors, upon arrival, confirmed his death.

Police sources explained that González immediately acknowledged having been the author of the shots to "protect" himself inside his house.

The prosecutor's office on duty, headed by prosecutor Mariano Leguiza Capristo, ordered the seizure of the weapon but did not order any impediment against the retiree.

The weapon used to kill the alleged thief was registered and had proper documentation. For this reason, Leguiza Capristo decided to characterize the cause as "investigation of causes of death, robbery aggravated by the use of a firearm and escalation."

The mayor of Lanús, Néstor Grindetti, used his social networks to take a position on the event: "Today is a very sad day. I want to express my solidarity with Juan Carlos González who had to choose between his life and that of a criminal who got into in his house in Villa Diamante to rob him," he wrote.

“I imagine the hell that must be happening and we from the Municipality of Lanús send you our full support. A circumstance where a person loses their life is always unfortunate, but I have no doubts in defending and assisting a neighbor who suffers a crime. I am with him, ”she closed.

Diego Kravetz, the Lanús chief of staff and head of the Security area, also posted on his Twitter account: "Yesterday, Juan Carlos de Villa Diamante had, at 76, to choose between defending his life and that of a jet who entered his house. I want to give him my support and accompaniment in this very difficult moment that he must be living ".

Marking a position in a new case of justice by his own hand, he insisted: "We will always be on the side of the neighbors and more of those who suffer crimes. Today criminals see older adults as easy targets, which is why the goal we set for ourselves is to be close to them and give them the tools to take care of themselves".
