Jair Bolsonaro said goodbye to the Brazilian presidency in tears and asked that there be no violence: "Nothing justifies a terrorist act"
The outgoing president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, said a tearful goodbye to his followers this Friday, in a network broadcast in which he did not touch on the issue of his presence or not at Lula da Silva's inauguration on Sunday.
“The world will not end on January 1 (...). We have a great future ahead of us. Battles are lost, but we will not lose wars," said the president during a live broadcast on his social networks, the first he has done since the election he lost in October, by 50.9% to 49.1%, against Luiz Inácio Lula. da Silva.
Bolsonaro plans to travel to the United States shortly when he leaves the presidency, although he did not clarify when he will embark, nor if he will participate in Lula's inauguration ceremony in Brasilia.
The General Secretariat of the Presidency authorized the transfer abroad of a delegation of officials to provide "security and personal support to the future former President of the Republic, Jair Messias Bolsonaro" on an international trip to "Miami, United States, to take place from the 1st to January 30, 2023″, according to the official gazette this Friday.
Bolsonaro did not mention the trip, but he addressed the hundreds of followers who continue to mobilize in front of military headquarters in Brasilia and other cities, asking for an intervention by the Armed Forces to prevent Lula's return to power.
"Some must be criticizing me, saying that I could have done this or that (...). I cannot do something that is not well done, without the side effects being too harmful”, justified the president.
Outside Alvorada's official residence, two protesters who were watching the live broadcast on his cell phone insulted him with shouts of "coward" and "without shame," the AFP news agency found.
"I never expected to get there," Bolsonaro said meanwhile, through tears. “At least, we delayed the collapse of Brazil by four years in this disastrous ideology that is the left (...). I did my best,” he added.
After the defeat, Bolsonaro had secluded himself in the official residence, keeping practically silent. Although he formally authorized the start of the government transition, he did not publicly acknowledge Lula's victory.
And just this Friday he criticized an attempted attack with an explosive in the surroundings of the Brasilia airport carried out by his sympathizers last week. "Nothing justifies this attempted terrorist act," he said, although he defended the rest of the protesters camped in the capital.
This and other acts of vandalism carried out by Bolsonarists in December in the capital forced to reinforce the security of Lula's inauguration, which will have unprecedented police force.
