Inflation in 2022 reached 8.46%, the highest in the last 26 years.

In its latest report, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) released the Consumer Price Index of Metropolitan Lima in the year 2022. The figure increased by 8.46%, a result higher than the variations registered in the last 26 years.

The entity explained that the categories of Food and non-alcoholic beverages and Transportation were the ones that registered the highest increase in the last 12 months.

- Food and non-alcoholic beverages: 15.21% due to the increase in the price of vegetables and tubers, as well as products such as eggs, sugar, bread and cereals.

- Transportation: 11.30% due to higher prices in fuels and lubricants, as well as vehicle spare parts, road transportation service, and local transportation.

- Restaurants and hotels: 9.49% due to the increase in menu prices in restaurants, hot à la carte dishes and desserts in recent months.

- Lodging, water, electricity, gas and others: 4.23% responds to the increase in receipts for these services.

The INEI indicated that the annual variation of prices was registered in the 26 cities of the country where the calculation is carried out. The highest variations were reported in the following cities:

- Hill of Pasco: 11.76%

- Huaraz: 11.40%

- Ica: 10.71%

The following regions reported a lower annual variation:

- Chimbote: 6.97%

- Tumbes: 6.90%

- Moyobamba: 4.60%

At the national level, the National Consumer Price Index grew 8.56% due to the increase in prices, mainly in the items of food and non-alcoholic beverages, transportation, restaurants and hotels, and various goods and services.

In 2022, due to the international crisis, the local economic crisis, road blockades, difficulties in the agricultural sector, among others, some foods increased in price, harming the economy of Peruvian families.

- Red potato 135.3%

- Yellow potato 130.4%

- White potato 76.7%

- Cassava 35.2%

- Olluco 32.2%

- Green peas 31.1%

- Spinach 26.7%.

According to the data provided by the Lima Wholesale Market, green peas went from costing an average of S/ 3.30 per kilo to S/ 5.63. The huayro potato at the beginning of 2022 cost S/ 1.58 per kilo and now its price is S/ 4.13, the yellow potato went from S/ 1.98 to S/ 3.68, and the white potato from S/ 1.98 to S/ 2.25. The olluco cost S/ 1.28 in January 2022 and now it costs S/ 2.88.

Other products in the basic family basket that also increased in price in recent months were chicken eggs (47%), evaporated milk (18%), brown sugar (33.3%), and long pasta noodles (56.7%). .

Meanwhile, in restaurants the dish that increased its price the most was chaufa rice (16.1%), followed by grilled chicken (13%), desserts (13%), chicken broth (11.5%), menu (11.3% ) and pork rinds (11%).
