The National University of Rosario (UNR) incorporated five new workers through the Travesti Trans Labor Quota, which was launched at the end of 2019 and ensures the entry of five percent or a minimum of three people per year. They will begin to fulfill their functions during the month of February. There are already 18 people who entered in the last 3 years, promoting the university as a pioneer in this field.
In this sense, the rector of the UNR, Franco Bartolacci, appreciated that the entrance of the trans Transvestite group to the university is beginning to be naturalized. “In 2019 we broke a barrier that had been very firm for a long time. It is not only this reparation policy, in isolation, but it is a set of policies on gender and sexualities that has allowed a transformation in the University", and added: "There is no university institution that has taken the steps that we gave in this sense. That has to make us proud as a community, because it is a collective construction, it goes far beyond the decision of an opportunity”.
In addition, the rector stressed that although it is a moment of satisfaction for the University, it is a path that continues because there is still much to do. “It is important that we continue pushing together, because it requires a share of daring to do so in institutions where it is difficult to make transformations. We have to continue working so that these policies continue to be produced regardless of who is at the University, so that it is an institutional policy that lasts over time”.
The quota bears the name of Alejandra González, who worked as a non-teaching worker in the Faculty of Biochemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Since 2019 and every year, it systematically incorporates transvestite, transgender and transsexual personnel into its non-teaching staff, through a proposal coordinated by the Gender and Sexualities Area and the non-teaching union (Apur).
The new incorporations will perform tasks in the Physical Education Department; the new Middle School of Social Sciences; the Casilda Agrotechnical Middle School; the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Design; and Faculty of Exact Sciences, Engineering and Surveying.
“In total there are 18 people who entered in the last 3 years. We are the only public institution in the country that incorporated so many people in this sense and that more than complies with the Law. The average age is 32 years and many people are also able to complete secondary studies thanks to the virtual school for adults that UNR launched a short time ago”, expressed Florencia Rovetto, head of the Gender and Sexualities Area of the National University of Rosario.
Regarding the labor insertion process, from the UNR it begins each year with the call to integrate the Single Registry of Applicants, which opens for 3 weeks, in the month of October. From there, interviews are conducted with applicants whose profiles are compatible with the open vacancies. It is worth mentioning that, as a general criterion, the aim is to prioritize the Transvestite trans population that presents the highest unemployment rates, which coincides with the population that is around 40 years of age.
The 5 people who join work and the workers who did so in previous years participated in the act. One of them thanked the UNR for the recognition of rights and the collective's claim and recalled that this possibility enabled in 2019 "is designed for our colleagues, giving us entity and the possibility of accessing a job, something that does not normally happen in all fields”.
In tune, another of the University workers acknowledged that the implementation of this quota "is not by chance, but rather a causality because there is a political decision that there is a labor quota that is fulfilled" and acknowledged that "there is the will for the University to be truly plural and diverse”.
