Falkland Islands

Thursday December 29. Penultimate business day of 2022 and the date chosen by the majority to send the typical end of the year greetings. Among the emails, letters and messages that come and go, there was one that stood out: that of a senator from the Frente de Todos who in her congratulations card named the Malvinas Islands as English.

This is María Eugenia Duré, a legislator and militant from La Cámpora who has represented Tierra del Fuego in the Upper House since 2019.

It was she who decided to send an email with a copy to all the senators and various organizations to welcome 2023 with a particular illustration of the country.

It is that the chosen image was a map of Argentina in which the Malvinas Islands appear identified as Falkland Islands. In addition, in parentheses it clarifies that they belong to Great Britain.

"May he find us united and in peace," says the phrase he chose to place next to the photo, which was also sent to the Secretariat of the Malvinas, Antarctica and South Atlantic. After the message with the gross error went viral, He maintained that his mailbox had been "hacked".

What is striking is that María Eugenia Duré is part of the National Council for Issues Related to the Malvinas Islands, which is also made up of Senators Juan Carlos Romero, Pablo Blanco, Gladys González and Carmen Lucila Crexell.

The body's main objective is to work to generate and implement State policies that make the full exercise of sovereignty over the aforementioned territory effective.

Likewise, the senator was the author of the project approved in June of this year, which establishes mandatory training on the issue of the Malvinas Islands for all people who work in public office.

At the time of presenting it, he had indicated: "It is necessary to ask how many officials really know what has happened to the Malvinas Islands and their usurpation and why it is so important to continue with the claim of sovereignty."

Since she took office in Congress, the Tierra del Fuego senator pointed out that the cause in question was one of her main commitments. And she took it upon herself to highlight it every time she could.

"Since I assumed my position as representative before the Senate of the Nation of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida and Islas del Atlántico Sur (AIAS), my commitment to make visible and honor the Malvinas Cause became a north to carry forward different initiatives in each area of action that I can be a part of", he had told Ámbito Financiero after presenting his latest project.

After the gross error went viral, which was circulated on networks after a tweet from the Twitter account @agendamalvinasOK, the senator camporista said that her email account had been hacked.

"I'm sorry to inform you that my official senate email was hacked. Therefore, this news is FALSE," he explained.

"The newsletter that circulates in the media in my name is FAKE, it is false news, since my emails, staff and the official Senate email were hacked, it is false news of all falsehood," he said about the mail that he sent to his peers in the Upper House and other bodies.
