The ultimate in luxury cruises: they have a roller coaster, magic carpet and mini-submarines

Boasting buzz names like “Ascent,” “Jubilee” and “Viva,” and ranging in capacity from 192 to 6,300 passengers, more than half a dozen cruise ships large and small will set sail for the first time in 2023.

On board these new constructions you can find everything from roller coasters to a magic carpet and mini-submarines. Below is an overview of the biggest news from shipping companies.

Following the recently christened “MSC World Europa”, MSC Cruises will commission a second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered ship in June 2023, the “MSC Eurybia”, named after an ancient goddess from Greek mythology. This cruise has a capacity for about 6,300 passengers and will initially sail through northern Europe.

While this new ship already has power supply on land, the "MSC Preziosa" and "MSC Fantasia" will be adapted to this system next year, so that a dozen ships in the fleet will then be designed for this type of operation.

In this way, in duly equipped ports, ships can supply themselves with energy through the land network, so they will not emit polluting gases even while they are moored.

With the “Celebrity Ascent”, the American shipping company Celebrity Cruises will launch the fourth ship of the so-called Edge class in December 2023.

The unique feature of these ships is a free-floating platform alongside the ship, which the shipping company calls the “Magic Carpet”.

The platform floats like a balcony on the sea and can go up and down between the "decks" or covers. The ship has a capacity for 3,260 passengers and will initially navigate the Caribbean.

The "Carnival Jubilee" is the third ship of the so-called Excel class, and, like its sister ships "Mardi Gras" and "Carnival Celebration", it is transported by LNG. The distinctive feature of these three boats is the roller coaster on the upper deck.

“Jubilee” will set sail on its maiden voyage in October 2023 from Southampton, England, across the Atlantic and then across the Caribbean. She has a capacity for about 5,200 passengers.

In addition, the Carnival family will also grow on behalf of its sister shipping company Costa Cruises: after the "Costa Luminosa" in 2022, the "Costa Venezia" will also sail in the Carnival fleet from spring 2023. A third ship, the “Costa Firenze” will follow in 2024. They will be in operation for the US market.

The line of these ships is called "Costa by Carnival" and, according to the shipping company, aspires to "unite Italian design and Mediterranean flair with the philosophy of American fun."

The second of six ships in the new Prima class will be ready to sail from the summer of 2023. But Norwegian Viva will be operational a bit later than planned, as she was due to set sail in June and will now probably set sail in August. The shipping company explained that there were problems in the supply chain.

The "Norwegian Viva" will be able to carry around 3,200 passengers and will initially sail through the waters of the Mediterranean and the Caribbean.

The "Silver Nova" is the eleventh ship in the fleet of this shipping company, which can be awarded to the luxury segment. The objective of the fuel concept is the reduction of polluting emissions: it combines LNG propulsion with a fuel cell system and battery technology.

This hybrid propulsion system should allow the new Nova-class ship to operate emission-free in ports of call.

The "Silver Nova" will be able to receive about 730 passengers and start sailing in the summer of 2023. Initially, the ship will be sailing through the Mediterranean.

The British cruise company Swan Hellenic, specialized in expedition cruises, announced the commissioning of the "SH Diana", which will become the largest ship in its fleet in the spring of 2023. It will offer space for 192 passengers, who will be attended by about 140 crew members.

Also the “Seabourn Pursuit”, from Seabourn cruise Line, is designed for expedition trips. She is the second luxury ship for expeditions of the shipping company after the "Seabourn Venture", of the same construction.

Up to 264 passengers can travel there and, like its sister ship, it has two small submarines on board. The "Pursuit" will be ready in February 2023, and its first trips include Greenland and Iceland.

The large German shipping companies Aida and Tui Cruises will not commission new ships during 2023. Instead, modernizations of “Mein Schiff 1″ and “Mein Schiff 5″ will be undertaken.

Among other things, they will receive the latest conversion works for the onshore power supply connection in dry dock, Tui Cruises reported.

As announced by the shipping company, the "Aida Prima" will put into service the "largest battery storage system in maritime passenger transport", with a capacity of ten megawatt hours.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten will invest almost 100 million euros (almost 106 million dollars) in the modernization of its fleet.

Thus, after the "MS Richard With", two other mail ships, the "MS Kong Harald" and the "MS Nordlys", will receive hybrid engines. Three other cruise ships (“MS Nordkapp”, “MS Polarlys” and “MS Nordnorge”) will receive SCR catalysts, through which they will emit less nitrogen oxides (NOx) than hitherto.

And by 2024 some resounding launches of more ships into maritime waters are also shaping up. Cunard's “Queen Ann”, after a two-year delay, will finally become operational, as will Royal Caribbean's “Icon of the Seas” and Tui Cruises' “Mein Schiff 7”.
